Ryan Crotty is a visual artist and abstract painter based in rural Nebraska. He creates non-representational color field paintings rooted in the process intensive traditions of printmaking. Highlighting evidence of the canvas support structure, surface imperfections, and materiality, he uses translucent paint to generate an interplay of light and color that challenges visual interpretation of a two-dimensional surface. Artist and writer Stephen Maine who first reviewed Crotty’s 2018 solo debut in Hyperallergic described the paintings as, “retooling post-painterly abstraction for the digital era” and noted that, “their transcendent luminosity is thrillingly at odds with their straightforward material presence.”
Ryan Crotty earned his BFA in painting from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and his MFA in painting from Syracuse University. In 2024 he will be included in the second cohort of the Retina Artist Residency at the French National Vision Hospital in Paris, and in 2025 will be collaborating with Burton on a line of back country snowboards. Recent solo exhibitions include Ever So Slightly Off, Rutger Brandt Gallery, Amsterdam, NE; Underlying Issues, Galerie Robertson Ares, Montreal, QC; and Eyes Closed to the Sun, High Noon, NYC. Recent group exhibitions include More Light!, Chart Gallery, NYC; Glow, Flinn Gallery at the Greenwich Library, Greenwich, CT; 300 Days of Sun, Hexton Contemporary, Aspen, CO; and SpringSprung, Marquee Projects, Bellport, NY. Crotty's work has been written about in the New York Times, the Washington Post, Hyperallergic, and Design Milk.
